611.4 Negotiating debt: An ethnographic experience in mediation center

One of the consequences of policies to stimulate credit in Brazil, especially among the mid-1990s and 2000s, was the significant increase in the indebtedness of the population. In the state of Rio Grande do Sul is an initiative led by the Court called the Mediation Center seeks to provide that the negotiation between people who have their livelihoods affected by the volume of debts and their creditors. This article is the result of ethnographic experience held in the institution, to the accompaniment of conciliation sessions.Mediations accompanied revealed that there are other issues, such as honor, fear of being excluded from financial markets and new ways to deal with monetization.
