A Sociological Study of Retired Government Employees in Ahmedabad

Retirement is a crucial event for an employee. Elderly population affects society and economic development. As a policy of India there is variation in the retirement age in Government and semi Government i.e. 58, 60 and 62. Retirement stage for Government and private employees is critical and emotional one because people have to face change in their daily activities and habits. There are some advantages, disadvantages and limitations regarding this.

This research paper intends to know the state and problems of retirement. The main objectives of this paper are;

-         To study the socio economic profile of retired people.

-         To know the life style of the respondents.

-         To understand the problems of retirement.

The sample is selected by snow ball technique. 175 retired people were selected for this study from all over Ahmedabad. The interview schedule was designed as a tool of data collection.

This paper is divided in four parts. The first part is introduction. The second part deals with methodology. The third part is on data analysis and discussion and the final part shows major findings and conclusions.

The study reveals that retirement from service does not mean incapability of physical activity hence they have opportunity to do choice based work.

They spend leisure time with family and society. Respondents show that the process of adjustment with new life has benefits and limitations. They should prepare themselves for it. Government and NGOs should take care of the retired people.
