The Future and Challenges of Professional Military Education
The Future and Challenges of Professional Military Education
Monday, 11 July 2016: 14:15-15:45
Location: Hörsaal 6D P (Neues Institutsgebäude (NIG))
RC01 Armed Forces and Conflict Resolution (host committee) Language: English
This session focuses on the diversity of the PME (Professional Military Education) systems in order to highlight the most recent challenges and report the latest developments in the field. Defence universities do not always cover the full spectrum of education and training needed to ensure a future stable supply of key skills and competences for defence. Smart weapons require smart military.
The session provides an international discussion forum for sharing experiences and new ideas concerning emerging aspects of the military education systems. Given the lack of new programmes, current and future needed skills are particularly at risk. The number of experts, specialists and scientists in the defence sector is shrinking dramatically; the situation is becoming more critical due to defence budget cuts and to the decreasing attractiveness of military and teaching profession. The authors will seek to map key defence skills and competences and develop concrete recommendations to maintain key defence skills and competences across the defence sector. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- tailoring education to future needs for the defence sector;
- responding to the information and technology explosion;
- highlighting existing and future gaps between likely technological developments and needed skills;
- personnel changes and the characteristics of members of the military;
- solutions for retention of the best-qualified personnel;
- quality assurance and PME standards and guidelines.
