RC39 Sociology of Disasters (host committee)

Language: English

Our current discourse about gender in disasters has been strongly shaped by women thinking about women. Contributions from masculinities literature has been limited, but represents a rapidly expanding area that offers important contributions to our overall understanding of disaster events and their impacts on families and communities.
This session welcomes research on how women and feminism and men and masculinities are framed in development studies, in climate change literatures, and in the gender and disaster subfield and how they can be brought together in a collective social justice approach to disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.
