Compensation and Culpability: Regulatory and Legal Challenges of Disasters

RC39 Sociology of Disasters (host committee)

Language: English

A number of recent “natural” and technological disasters have dramatically illustrated the importance of regulatory and compensatory frameworks and how each is mobilized both domestically and internationally. These issues are framed by social, political, and economic inequality: the unequal distribution of risk and the ineffectiveness of legal response can be amplified by inequality in mobilizing the law on one’s own behalf. This session will bring sociological insights to concerns about limits to the legal regulation of safety and compensation for loss through legal processes.
