RC44 Labor Movements (host committee)

Language: English

This session brings together six parallel roundtables. When you submit a paper proposal online, please specify to which roundtable it is.

  • Bridget Kenny and Rachel Sherman: The Politics of Production and Consumption
We seek to bring together scholars thinking theoretically and empirically about the connections between production and consumption, in order to map new ways of conceptualising and investigating their relation, at multiple levels of analysis (Bridget.Kenny@wits.ac.za).

  • Rebecca Gumbrell-Mccormick: International Trade Unionism: Ten Years after the Founding of the ITUC
Ten years after the foundation of the ITUC (International Trade Union Confederation), this is an appropriate moment to evaluate the impact of structural changes and new developments in the international movement, and to consider challenges and opportunities for the future (r.gumbrell-mccormick@bbk.ac.uk).

  • Nobuyuki Yamada: Migrant Workers in Developing/ed Asia
This roundtable addresses organizing and advocacy activities for migrant workers in East and Southeast Asia, for example, for advocacy, organizing, and institutional alternation (jogoaya@ruby.plala.or.jp).

  • Sarah Swider, Elena Shih and Lu Zhang: Training and the Next Generation of Labor in the US and China
This roundtable invites papers and presentations that explore the role of labor centers in China and the US, along with other training organizations, in shaping labor movements. It seeks to understand the role of cross fertilization in the making of vibrant labor movements (sswider@gmail.com).

  • Chun-Yi Lee, Florian Butollo and Tim Pringle: Transformation of Chinese Labour
The roundtable invites papers on industrial upgrading, investment flows, urbanization, labour organizing, institutional reform, employer responses to strikes and rising labour costs, labour struggles and their evolution and resolution in China (Chun-Yi.Lee@nottingham.ac.uk).
