There is increasing awareness of the fact that incarceration affects not only the individual offender, but also the family of the incarcerated individual. Prisoners are disproportionately from marginalized sectors of society. Firstly this makes them more vulnerable to imprisonment, and secondly imprisonment adds additional burden on their families.
This session will focus on the intersection between family and incarceration. Theoretical work that looks critically at prison in society, and at prison and family, are invited. In light of the conference theme of a “better world”, research or discussion papers that deal with the effects of incarceration on families during and after incarceration in different social, cultural and political environments, are invited. In addition, evaluation research on innovative programs to prevent incarceration, to support families of the incarcerated, to improve communication and family ties during incarceration, and to support transition after incarceration help are also relevant to this session.
