Metropolis and Environment: Conflicts, Challenges and Opportunities
Cities, metropolis, or the expansion of metropolis, have been increasingly object of studies in the field of sociology (environment sociology, urban sociology and sociology of cities) and in the interdisciplinary approach with other frontiers of knowledge. In the current world in metamorphosis at least two premises seem certain: we are becoming more and more urban and consuming more and more natural resources of the planet. Air pollution, climate change (adaptation and mitigation), waste management, water scarcity, ocean pollution, among others, are increasingly serious issues in cities around the world.
The purpose of this session is to enable a broad dialogue, in the field of sociology and related areas, on research, case studies, and policies regarding the conflicting tension between the Environment and the lives in the Metropolis. In this sense, works that discuss not only conflicts and tensions, but also networks, opportunities and solutions to the issues and challenges presented on a planetary scale are welcome. We also reinforce the importance of a dialogue between the global south and north, for the creation of a fertile debate and construction of new knowledge necessary to the environmental and urban paradigms of the twenty-first century.
