Session Type: Oral

AI, Gig Work, Digital Labor, and the New Economy: This set of phenomena - with the potential to fundamentally restructure the economy – has attracted increasing attention across the social sciences as well as public discourse more generally. However, the bulk of the research in this area is dominated by the widespread economistic and technology-focused perspectives. The field is badly in need of a sociological and comparative perspective, which this panel will supply. Papers will cover a broad variety of global regions and will cut across a number of subfields within sociology, including the sociology of technology, the sociology of economic inequality, the sociology of work, and the sociology of health.
