World is urbanizing and south is urbanizing even faster. With urbanisation housing, basic services and livelihood for the poor are becoming major problems many developing societies. Migrants who cannot afford proper housing are forced to build temporary housing without proper utilities called as slums and squatters. The poor labour is shifting to urban areas. Housing problem seem to acquire serious dimension in the wake of rapid urbanization, commodification of land and housing, distortion in land market and weakening of public sector housing provision in post liberalisation period. Housing shortage in urban areas is growing and situation is worsening for the poor. The urban inequality visible in terms of housing, basic services and livelihoods for the poor in rapidly urbanizing societies requires urgent attention of the policy makers, planners and academic circles. While affordability is another crucial issue the informalisation of labour is an important social fact the developing world is facing. Housing for the urban poor households is emerging a major social problem caused by forces within and outside the political economic system. The pace of work towards achieving SDGs concerned with housing, basic services and livelihood is slow in many counties. The good original papers linked with above dimensions are welcome. The studies highlighting the best practices in any of the theme associated with the title of the session are also welcome.
