The growth of competition in educational systems and in the labor market, linked to the unequal distribution of several resources which influence student’s experiences and performances, have been compelling families to engage in many dimensions of children schooling. Furthermore, in the last decades educational reforms have encouraged, in different ways and degrees, the family participation in school and educational system management. In this way, the augmentation of the family’s involvement in collective actions including demands for resources and opportunity as well as disputes over values and meanings of school education has been observed. These mobilizations, whose specificity depend on national and local contexts, can be episodic or sustainable, and their strategies and performances may use institutional arenas of participation, take advantage of personal privileged bonds, establish alliances with social movements and civic organizations, and make demands to media or judiciary institutions. The mobilizations goals can include from the defense or critic of educational policies, pedagogical orientations and practices to the struggle for educational rights or material and human resources. Following a meaningful increasing interest in the family’s engagement in educational matters in sociological research, this session invites papers which analyze different arrangements of collective actions played by families. Papers should address struggles or negotiations for educational opportunities and resources as well as the very meanings and values of the school education, school organization and pedagogical practices in educational systems.
