This session invites papers that address various dimensions of energy systems and social-ecological futures. Societal reliance on fossil fuel (coal, oil and gas) based energy systems is a major driver of climate change and other environmental issues. Thus, it is critical to re-evaluate and re-imagine our energy systems. However, work on energy and social futures has largely been carried out by engineers and economists. This has produced a range of engineering-economic models that tend to neglect the social and political forces that shape, support or constrain various energy futures. They also fail to account for socio-economic and political inequalities that shape environmental governance. This session welcomes empirical and theoretical papers that deploy perspectives from Environmental Sociology, Science Technology and Society, Futures Studies, Environmental Justice or related subfields to the topic of energy systems and socio-ecological futures. We invite submissions that address the social challenges, possibilities and trade-offs involved in pursuing fossil fuels, nuclear power, hydro-electric, and emerging renewable energies, such as wind, solar and tidal power. Through the engagement of a diversity of perspectives, this session will generate new theoretical and substantive insight into the connections between energy systems and social-ecological futures.
