The encounter with things and material structures plays a central role in fine arts, architecture and design, The process of the making of art and the designing of buildings and artefacts engages certain modes of sensual perception and bodily encounter of materiality at its centre. So does the perception of art and the everyday use of buildings and artefacts. How the aesthetic experience of these encounters with materiality can be investigated, is currently of growing interest. In sociology, an increasing interest in the everyday appreciation of the aesthetic, the emotional, and the affective can be wittnessed since the 1990s. Nowadays sensual perception, and the bodily confrontation with raw material is increasingly thought of as a process of meaningbuilding in its own rigth and gains growing scholary interest.

The session addresses various questions that arise from encounters with materiality. How can one describe the perception of art, architecture and design as meaningful and sensual encounters? To what extent are such perceptual concepts and encounters intended by artists, architects and designers? What role does corporeality and performativity play? How do these encounters form or effect the social?
