There has been increasing attention from both practitioners and academics in recognising the significant contribution of images and other visual material in shaping reactions to real or imagined threats and different futures, from the increasing use of imaginative visuals to better communicate risk, to the study of media imagery and data capturing and visualisation techniques. The Anthropocene, moreover, presents a whole set of new challenges and opportunities for the visualisation of environmental risks. Yet, the visual dimension of risk has yet to be established as a consistent field of research that combines the richness of academic enquiry on risk in the social sciences with the expertise of scholars and practitioners working in visual culture. In this panel we hope to explore the possibility for such an interdisciplinary discourse: we welcome papers that examine particular risk and challenges through the investigation of their visual material or that propose innovative approaches to the visualisation of ‘what might happen’.
