Social policy and poverty alleviation in Asian and South East Asian is an under-researched area. This region is extremely diverse, including some of the world’s richest and also some of its poorest nations. It encompasses the “Asian Tiger” economies of the 1980s and 1990s like Singapore, the enormity of contemporary China, and countries that are part of the economic global south like the Philippines. Understanding the social security systems in Asian and South east Asian countries requires consideration of complexities including diverse economic histories, internal and international political history, international obligations, the specifics of colonial and post-colonial histories and unique cultural contexts. This panel aims to bring together researchers who can illuminate similarities and differences among these complex regimes to allow a more complete understanding of social policy systems and poverty alleviation in this region.
