The world is changing drastically in regard to socio-economic, political, educational and employment aspects and this might put a risk to the development of AYA generation (adolescents and young adults). Several complex phenomena come readily to mind, such as prolonged economic depression, prevailing country-centric politics and exclusive conservatism, unstable employment and poverty, widening gaps between have and have-nots, globalizing neo-liberal economy and emergence of very few huge capital companies, intensified competitive society seeking for better education and employment, over dependent internet technology, food waste and hunger, and so on. We experience divisions of society by various aspects. According to a socio-ecological model of health, all of these changes put risks to individual’s mental health, particularly in vulnerable populations including adolescents and young adults. Then, do protective factors for positive development and better mental health fall into decline in “lifeworld”? Those factors include trust, reciprocity, altruism, respect for societal and cultural norm, volunteerism, hope for future, a sense of empathy or sympathy to others, contribution to others, and modesty. How can we recover or enforce such protective factors or promoting factors? In this session, we explore not only risk factors but also protective factors of mental health in adolescents and young adults, including links with ongoing social changes from macro to micro level.
