To define popular religion has been a challenge: either theoretically or empirically, scholarship has found limits to clearly circumscribe it. In some cases, because empirically does not exactly fit within "working class/ the poor/ the non institutional/ the popular", and its practices are spread both among other social classes and even the religious institutions. In other cases, because the definition of "popular religion" has been constructed vis-a-vis the concept of religion, as its downgraded version.
In this session we propose that, both through empirical research or theoretical analysis, we could discuss these challenges and propose new paths to reinvigorate a traditional debate.
