The generalized crisis of the exhaustion of natural resources imposes not only a criticism of the limits of economic rationality, but also a crisis of the State and the legitimacy of its instances of political representation. In the Latin American rural societies, these crises also reveal the violence and socio-environmental conflicts marked by developmental government policies and the advance of the market model of social (re) appropriation of nature.

This conflicts has reoriented the broader possibilities in the discussion of scenarios on environmental policies and institutional planning on the use and management of natural resources based on social protagonism and the possibilities of popular participation due to diversity of counter-hegemonic social experiences based on the idea of an environmental democracy. The emergence of new actors and social movements constitute new forms of resistance in the current political scenario, organizing themselves in non-hierarchical, decentralized and participatory structures, denoting perspectives, methods and approaches to the political arena and they have a democratic political culture.

The purpose of this session is to stimulate reflections on the processes of resistance and political mobilization of various Latin American experiences associated with the popular participation of indigenous peoples, peasants and other traditional rural communities in their relationship with the State, with their governmental policies and socio-environmental conflicts marked by economic, political and territorial dimensions. We hoped that the contributions will allow to generate analyzes in the field of Social and Environmental Sciences that allow collaborating for an interdisciplinary network of socio-environmental studies in Latin America.
