Wither the Neo/Liberal University? Continuities and Discontinuities in Higher Education Around the Globe

At the same time that some analysts proclaim or predict revolutionary change in the nature and future of higher education around the globe, others argue that the more things change, the more they stay the same. This session aims to explore the continuities and discontinuities in the social relations of higher education (at local, national, and/or international levels), and to critically assess their implications both for those directly involved in higher education institutions and the broader social contexts in which these institutions are located. It aims also to address and critique the ways in which various constituencies inside and outside universities (including students, faculty, administrators, members of the business community, civil society organizations, and/or governments) are responding - and could or should be responding - to these continuities and changes. Papers may focus on the nature and implications of either specific developments in higher education institutions (such as those related to administrative, faculty, and/or student work practices; the use of information, communication, surveillance, and/or other technologies; forms of collaboration among and between internal and external parties; new institutional initiatives such as to Indigenize or decolonize universities, etc.) or of more general developments, such as changes in the production and/or implementation of policy related to higher education or other relevant areas like labour market policy or free trade/common market agreements. Papers may be empirical, theoretical, comparative, or a combination of these.
