Cultural products such as films, series, advertising spots, videoclips, news stories etc., even before telling a story or showing events, they (re)present to us, in an organized and staged manner, certain constructions concerning the societies. Most of such constructions are presented to us as “natural”, since they inherit the way, over time, we learn how to perceive the flow of events organized in a screen. The acceptance of a given type of cinematographic decoupage throughout the 20th century, the increasing presence of TV on everyday life, the interface of sociability by computers, and, more recently, by contemporary devices helped characterize the way we engage in this flux that is configurated on the screens. Thus, a considerable part of the products circulating and being consumed do not tell stories only. Rather, they present an articulated view of the various social aspects of the contemporary world, enhancing some elements to the detriment of others, concealing or not giving visibility to certain values, ranking social framework and relations, and they also suggest perspectives regarding several aspects of the social life such as love, sexuality, politics etc. The proposal for this session is, therefore, to make room to discuss audiovisual products at large in the sociological research, especially those studies dedicated to identify how such relations and values are constructed, taking into account the expressive elements that are an integral part of these products – as such, for example, images, colors, movements (including camera movements), music, sounds, dialogues, and silences.
