We exist within the confines of an information system called human culture. The aim of this session is to identify the building blocks of a functional theory of social systems. A functional theory of social systems has to take-into-account that evolution is a dual process comprised of the evolution of the biological systems along with the evolution of the information systems. In any theory of social systems, it is necessary to theorize the different layers of social and cultural organization, from the material and organizational function of social reproduction through the ideational processes of human culture to the psychological dimension of the personality and its effects on social interaction. One of the guiding ideas of this session is that social groups compete not only for land, resources and power, but also to prove the viability and superiority of their Functional Ideas. Papers are invited that contribute to the development of functional theories of social systems.
