Language: English
Session Type: Oral
This joint session aims to present empirical and conceptual contributions at the intersection of the sociology of organization and migration.
We call for works that reflect on the role of organizations in processes of migration or integration. Refugee flows from Venezuela as well as from Latin America to the US-Border are just two recent examples out of many. There is also a strategic interest of nation states to let certain selected workers into the country in an organized way or to send them abroad. In this session we would like to analyze such phenomena with the perspective of organization studies. Migration cannot be studied without understanding organizations (as well as networks and alliances between them) as extremely important actors - for example as political decision-makers, employers or education mediators. How can organization theories help us to better understand the current phenomenon of migration and the different strategies for dealing with it?
We are furthermore interested in studies that try to elaborate our understanding of organizations by referring to the sociology of migration. There are many examples for organizations relying on long or short term migration of their members. Today, organizations establish interactions, networks and alliances with organizations from diverse parts of the world. This makes intercultural discourse an integral part of organizational life. What does that mean for organizational structures, strategies, cultures or processes of sense-making? How can concepts from the sociology of migration help us to deal with these issues in organization studies?
