Media behavior and reading culture are changing rapidly today. In part, the growing marketization of society and cultural life has transformed people's attitudes to reading and literary culture - with the result that serious high literature has lost a considerable deal of its former sociocultural status and public visibility. At the same time, these changes in people's attitudes are also a result of new reading technologies and platforms (desktops, laptops, e-readers, tablets, handheld devices); therefore, reading can today include navigating and clicking in a media environment that is mainly digital by nature. In addition, today literary culture has also to compete with other media and leisure time activities for people's attention, time and money. Due to changes such as these, traditional reading culture and even literacy as such are faced with serious challenges and problems in several countries. The same is true of the central institutions of literacy and reading - schools, libraries and universities - that try to adjust themselves to this complicated situation and to solve the problems caused by it. The session "Transformation of Media Behavior, Reading Culture and the Institutions of Reading in Current Societies" concentrates on these themes. It wishes to welcome papers that analyse people's current media and reading behavior, or the current state of the institutions of reading.  Papers like these can deal with the themes at issue in a single country, or, alternatively, they can present a comparative analysis of the situation in different countries.
