Session Type: Oral

This session aims to explore new trends in sociology of education and examine educational problems of the Global Age that connect with issues of democracy, the environment, inequalities and intersectionality. We will ask how education and sociology of education have been meeting these four global challenges and how they are transformed by them. In stormy and uncertain times, when the well-being of children and young people is threatened, education systems should become places that connect pedagogy to economics and the curriculum to pressing humanitarian needs; places that are connected with the real lives and real challenges faced by students and teachers as they seek to reconstruct their futures and re-consider who they might become. In particular, in this session, we aspire to give a wide range of sociologists of education, academics, practitioners and fellow travelers, an opportunity to present and engage with research and scholarship that opens up everything to question – do we have to teach this way, is the curriculum relevant to what is happening in the lives of students, can schools be run differently, can we envision an education that is socially just, what role can sociology of education play in all of the above, and what could be its potential influence in the public sphere?
More than ever, in the Global Age we need to take a fresh look at sociology of education in order to better understand how it can contribute both in theory and practice, in the challenges of society, education and social life.
