Session Type: Oral

In a time when youth participation has gained a momentum in both political agendas and academic research, a general agreement is emerging about the urgency to have a closer look to the “black box” of youth civic and political engagement. In particular, the adoption of an intersectional approach appears much needed in order to better understand challenges and opportunities that young people encounter in their pathways of participation.

In this perspective, the session wishes to explore gender as a force in the emergence and development of youth participation and welcomes papers considering questions such as:

  • How gender becomes a topic and a frame in youth participation?
  • How youth pathways, practices and lived experiences of participation are shaped by gender?
  • Which gender systems and ideas of femininity and masculinity emerge in different initiatives of youth participation?
  • How youth participation fosters social changes in gender or reproduce gender inequalities?

Papers can examine these and other questions in relation to a wide range of initiatives (from feminist and LGBTQ+ organisations to far-right groups) and modes (conventional/unconventional) of participation. Empirical (qualitative and quantitative) studies and comparative (between different cases, cross-national) analyses employing an intersectional approach are particularly welcome.
