Session Type: Oral

This Joint Session aims for a dialogue between different approaches to the subjects of generation, age, life course, and its links to social inequality.

The contemporary context presents specific challenges to childhood and youth studies, due to the place given to newer generations in social reproduction projects, and the particular ways in which gender, class, race, location, and other inequalities are now being processed. A transversal axis to both childhood and youth studies has been the focus on agency and the analysis of the institutional modes of social incorporation devoted to children and youth, as well as the specific constraints experienced by new generations. Nevertheless, the point of views from which each field frames those topics varies notably between fields. For instance, if gender and sexuality has been explored around identity, social relations and practices in youth studies field, these same issues have been considered as sexualization, gender socialization, and sex education in the field of childhood studies.

The present joint session looks forward to catalyzing dialogues that ponder the divergences and similarities among fields in light of the challenges posed by new and persistent inequalities, especially focusing in theoretical and methodological advances, definitions on age periodization, life course, and the impact in public policy and institutionalization of childhood and youth.
