The organizers of RC28’s activities in the ISA’s 2020 Forum in Porto Alegre invite submissions of research papers concerning the association between socio-economic family characteristics of children while they are in utero and in the early childhood, and their achievements in childhood, adolescence and adulthood.  Disparities in cognitive and non-cognitive development between children belonging to different socioeconomic strata appear in early childhood, even before they enter the formal education system. Young children, who grow up in the lower strata, when the brain is particularly malleable, may suffer from persistent stress and deprivation in intellectual stimuli that can slow their cognitive development. Exposure to deprivation and to stress has a cumulative effect over time such that achievement gaps between children born into families in stronger and weaker social strata expand from early childhood to early adolescence.
