The expansion and diversification of higher education systems have increased access to higher education. Yet, there is a growing concern that the expansion of higher education systems may shift the mechanisms of inequality from access to non-completion, especially among students from disadvantaged social backgrounds. The proposed session calls for papers that explore the relations between social background and degree non-completion and potential consequences for broader life-course and stratification processes. We welcome studies that investigate the role played by horizontal divisions in higher education, and studies focusing on the intersections between social background, gender and racial or ethnic minority background.
