Rational choice theory has made major contributions to the analysis of the mechanisms of educational inequality. These involve, for instance, the role of cost-barriers, relative loss-aversion, variations in returns to education, as well as information biases concerning the perceived difficulty and profitability of educational investments. The proposed session calls for empirical papers testing to what extent rational choice mechanisms account for educational inequalities. We encourage in particular papers that articulate the analysis of these decision-making mechanisms for different countries or cohorts and that, more generally, analyse the interplay between micro-level determinants of educational inequalities and macro-level institutional contexts (e.g., tracking, centralisation, counselling, etc.).
