This paper session is focused on the interrelation of religion, migration, and health trajectories. During the process of mobility, migrants have limited access to health care services, thus, they turn to attainable modalities of care, which could include diverse self-care practices and other resources mainly based on alternative forms of care constituting approachable options during their journey.
Considering that some religious/faith-based institutions are essential on providing support to migrants during the transit and settlement processes, we argue that religious practices and religious networks play a fundamental role, either providing alternative treatments based on religious healing or favoring medical care access to this population. Accordingly, migrants follow health/illness/care trajectories, combining different forms of care which could include: medical care, traditional medicine, religious healing and esoteric therapies, among others. Alternative health resources may be found by migrants in the transit and receiving contexts, as well as among the migrant communities they are related to. We propose the submission of papers analyzing the relationship established between religious, migratory and illness/care trajectories, lived by populations in highly vulnerable conditions. We are interested in the discussions around these questions:
- Which is the role that religions and faith-based institutions play in the health-illness and care processes during the migratory journey?
- Which forms of care based on religious orientations do migrants use to take care of their health and which are their cultural conceptions about them?
- Which methodological strategies do researchers use to approach the study of overlapping trajectories such as Migration, Religion and Health paths?
