Women face various forms of oppressions in society and their participation in employment, particularly in male-dominated professions is limited. There is a huge gender gap in employment as most women work in the unorganized sector in unsafe and unhygienic conditions, do low quality unskilled work, and are paid less for the same work done by men. Given the patriarchal structure of most of the societies and legal, social and cultural practices that hinder women’s development, their struggles are severe and challenging. However, women all over the world have moved beyond the paradigm of victimhood and exercise their agency by combating oppression by meaningful resistance, individually and collectively. This has lead to concern among various people and organizations about women’s discrimination and need to make the employment sector and working spaces more inclusive ensuring a more gender just society. Various strategies of inclusion for a fair participation and representation of women in employment are being worked out across the globe. Protection and security of job, safe working conditions and laws to protect women from harassment are some of the efforts being made. Besides focusing on the structural inequalities of society and home, it is equally important to address the institutional barriers that women face in the sphere of employment. This session will focus on the employment scenario that continues to exclude women and different strategies being adopted and implemented for making the society and economy more gender inclusive.
