RC20 Comparative Sociology (host committee)
Language: English
Session Type: Oral
The popular press, political leaders, and public debate all claim that migration is not only the hottest topic but almost unresolvable problem nowadays. The session we propose to organize in the framework of the RC 20 ‘Comparative Sociology’ at the Fourth ISA Forum outlines three challenges sociologists need to concentrate on in order to achieve productive outcomes in understanding current migration processes: first is comparative outlook; second, would be transnational perspective; and third is ‘no west-vs-the-rest’ paradigm for the solution. All three challenges have one thing in common which calls us to use the richness of comparative sociology: comparative vision, comparative methods, and comparative analysis.
Initial research question for the “Comparative Research in Transnational Migration” session at the Fourth ISA Forum Congress is the following: Why Comparative Sociological Approach Matters in Studying Transnational Migration?
The overall objective of the Session is to reposition transnational migration studies within current comparative sociology and comparative sociological analysis and to outline the changing context in which comparative inquiry of such a social construction as transnational migration takes more extensively place in the 21 century.
The Session will be oriented towards discussion and comparative analysis of the transnational migration in Japan, China, Southeast Asia as well as in the former Soviet Union countries, Europe, and the USA.
Comparative sociological and anthropological explanations of Intersectionality, Class and Migration, Narratives of Female Migration are very welcomed.
