We envision comparative sociology as a significant and necessary lens through which to view the professional sociology development as well as to detect paths to positive prospects of doing sociology in in the 21 century. Recently there has been a great deal of media and politicians’ attention given over to the phenomena of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, known as the BRICS countries. Much less attention is paid by so-called international sociology to perspectives developed in these countries, in consonance with the arguments developed in R. Connell’s “Southern Sociologies”. This is tragic for sociology because these five countries alone contain make up over 40% of the world’s population.
The session we propose for the Fourth ISA Forum aims to critically explore the reality of sociological research and teaching developed in the BRICS countries. The Session will aim to build towards comparative understanding of what helps and what constrains the organization of sociology as a research and teaching discipline in these countries.
The proposed session also wishes to celebrate and debate the crucial contributions that have been made recently in joint sociological projects in BRICS countries. We encourage submissions that accommodate clear comparative perspectives and provide grounding for discussion of the challenges and realities that sociology faces in BRICS countries especially when compared with the industrialized countries.
