If the issue of climate change mitigation was the main focus of action, studies and polices until recently, the adaptation agenda has gained, year after year, more space in academic debate and public policy. One of the reasons for this is the impact of the theme on world cities and megacities. Cities have been mentioned more and more frequently as components of the problem and also of solutions to the effects of climate change. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) held a meeting in March 2018 for the first time focus on Cities & Climate Change, endorsing the importance of discussing cities as the center of climate debates, as recommended by the 43rd session of the IPCC in Nairobi (2016).
And why the cities? Because they represent more than 70% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from fossil fuels and are areas that are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and where actions for adapation are urgent.
Although almost a consensus in forums of international debates, the actions or leadership of cities as active actors in relation to the effects of climate change on a subnational scale remains fragile. This session aims to contribuite to a science and policy dialogue regarding adataption to climate change in a interdisciplinary approach and perspectives. In this sense contribuitions from best cases on adapatation, plans and projects (nationa or subnational), oportunities, challenges and solutions, but also critical analysis, including climate justice perspective, will be considered and encouraged.
