Language: English and Spanish
Session Type: Oral
Schools have shaped ‘human’ bodies and disciplined their emotions in distinct national contexts and among diverse populations, thus representing a modern device that provides capitalist societies with productive and educated men and women. The widespread growth of universal education systems pushes social scientists to incorporate new dimensions for analysing inequality, discrimination, and stigmatization processes in educational institutions. In recent years, bodies and emotions became relevant issues in educational research, as well as a core topic in some educational programs. Then, sociological research on education is being challenged, as it is necessary to develop a deeper understanding of those processes and politics while enhancing a more robust, structural and theoretical approach about the influence that emotional and corporal dimensions have on modelling individual’s experiences, educational paths and educational policies around the world.
This session seeks to continue the previous ones held in the ISA Forum in Vienna, 2016, and the ISA World Congress in Toronto, 2018, where many senior and junior sociologists met to discuss their own research contributions. The objective is to analyse the complex dynamics of body construction and emotion creation in educational environments, and the relationship with inequality (re)production considering national, regional and global shifts. We will prioritize contributions based on empirical research that goes beyond the particular case and states deeper dialogues and discussions framed in structural dimensions, educational policies, and theoretical issues. The ultimate goal for this session is to attain an international research network for the study of emotions and bodies in educational settings.
