Session Type: Oral

Hope seems to be within the context of the threats and challenges of contemporary global society at the same time impossible and necessary. Within sociology, hope is no longer perceived as an unrealistic, nonsensical and naïve emotion. A growing number of empirical and theoretical studies, on the contrary, conceptualise the productive role of hope and its relationship with human agency. The understanding of this fundamental ‘rope’ towards the future needs both a conceptual and terminological discussion and the evaluation of the empirical findings that empirical research has so far produced in various territorial contexts and different topics.  This session gathers both empirical research on hopeful ways of practising the future in different research fields and theoretical papers on the concept of hope.
