On average, returns to education, especially on higher levels, have steadily increased in knowledge- and technology-driven economies. At the same time, labor market outcomes are now more heterogeneous and show considerable variation in returns within the same level of education. In order to understand these (more nuanced) forms of social inequality within stratification, it is crucial to specifically look 'beyond the average' return. This session seeks papers that address the variability of returns and particularly its causes. It invites papers that specifically employ advanced statistical methods of understanding variance (for instance, variance decomposition, quantile or variance function regression). Research comparing countries, different institutional settings and developments over time is particularly welcome.
