Green Revolution technologies backed by vigorous small farm holders has seen Asian agriculture undergoing major transformation during the last five decades. Small farm holder’s peasant community in Asia accounts nearly 87% of the farms having below two hectares and contributed tremendously to the growth of agriculture and achieved self sufficiency by producing food grains required to feed the country’s teeming population. With introduction of the Neo Liberal Economic Policy and privatization of resources, agrarian society of India has been passing through a critical phase since 90’s, called as Agrarian Crisis. Farmers particularly belonging to small and middle category are committing suicide at regular intervals. According to Government of India statistics nearly three lakhs farmers have committed suicide between 1995 to2014.The figures could be more if efforts to compile the data of last four years are made. The states which accounted highest number of farmer’s suicide are Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu and Odisha. This session intends to focus on the nature of production process in the present day agriculture in the Asian region and explore the reasons for farmers committing suicide. Also to examine the policy frame work of the respective governments to contain the precarious situation prevailing in the agricultural sector of Asia.
