The rapid growth of cities has significantly shaped the global landscape and economic future in recent decades. The raise of megacities, cities with more than 1 million inhabitants, poses new challenges and opportunities for researchers, policy makers, and city planners. The United Nations estimated that the number of megacities would reach 43 by the year 2030 when they will house 9% of the global population and contribute 15% of the world’s GDP. Developing countries will dominate megacity growth over the next two decades. The emergency of megacities fundamentally affects physical futures, inter-groups relationship, and cultural and socioeconomic condition of neighborhoods, which have far-reaching impacts on a variety of social and individual outcomes. This session aims to unit scholars interested in neighborhood studies in megacities worldwide. We invite contributions that highlight changes and impacts of neighborhoods, and social mechanisms of neighborhood effects. Impacts of various dimensions of neighborhoods on the population at difference life stage, social processes through which neighborhoods shape well-being of the residents, and innovative research methods and data collection techniques are examples of possible topics that would fit into the session. Comparative studies of neighborhood effects in multiple countries and regions are also particularly welcome.
