While the literature considering the consequences of ethnic concentration and that evaluating the size and scale of concentration/segregation is vast, there is a more limited understanding of the drivers and reasons behind the persistence of ethnic minority concentration and of its association over time with spatially concentrated deprivation. The proposed session calls for papers that discuss the dynamics behind the spatial concentration of migrants and their children, and which explore different types of explanations for this (i.e. demographic, socioeconomic, ethnic preferences and constraints). A guiding question is: what makes neighbourhood ethnic concentration, and the link between this and neighbourhood deprivation, persist over time and over generations?
