Abstract Submissions Closed

Sunday, 28 February 2021: 09:00-10:30
Location:

RC34 Sociology of Youth (host committee)

Language: English

Session Type: Oral

Historically, the Global North has been the site for knowledge-making in sociology. Criticism by a wide range of scholars working in the Global South have rightly drawn our attention to the role social science has played in the colonial and domination practices of nations states. In this process, many theories and ‘world views’ of the Global South have been marginalised or ignored and seen as ‘second class theories’. Yet questions remain concerning what relationship, if any, can northern theorists have with developments in the Global South? Are some theories able to ‘cross borders’ and make positive contributions? Or are the risks and challenges too great? In this session we want to explore these questions and create an opportunity for those working with Northern theory in the Global South to both share their experiences and also their findings. We are therefore looking for researchers, who submit to this session to explore questions such as:

  • What are the strengths and weaknesses of using the ideas and tools from the Global North in researching in the Global South?
  • What are the methodological and ethical challenges of using such approaches in this context? Does the use or even adaptation of such theories contribute to the global hegemony of northern theorists?
  • Are there approaches being developed that involve collaboration or cross fertilisation of Northern and Southern theories?
  • What results/findings emerge out of youth research in the Global South using Northern theory?
