Contemporary societies have exposed increasingly to socionatural and sociotechnical disasters. These types of catastrophes refer to events originated from hearth forces which have increased their frequency and magnitude given factors such as the climate global change and the risks associated with sociotechnical incidents such as oil spills or nuclear material leaks. These events are a unique opportunity to understand the interactions among political actors and the institutional contexts under which agents are related, insofar as crisis unveils power arrangements, controversies about the legitimacy of normative contexts, and eventual governance shifts in specific societies or communities. In this regard, the study of political actors’ interactions and their embeddedness into institutions at different geographical scales matters in the context of socionatural and sociotechnical disasters. This session calls for papers focused on the roles of institutions such as market, the State and local agencies, and the performance of political actors at different phases of the disaster management.
