During the last decades, religious practices have presented an important dynamism that has turned them into privileged subjects to study the transformations in the configurations of the daily life and the public sphere. In this framework, social sciences of religion have studied not only the emergence of new religious practices and identities, but also the development of syncretic processes between traditional and new spiritual practices in a context of increasing pluralism. In addition, in recent years we have met the challenge of analyzing the incidence of religious groups in the processes of agenda building and decision making, especially in those issues related to legislation and public health management.
This incidence is not new. Given the public nature of contemporary religions and the processes of constitution of the National States, there is a long history of mutual interrelation between religious groups and politics, and between religious groups and the State. However, the conflicts over people’s sovereignty over their bodies, their lives and their very personal decisions brought back to the forefront various religious groups with diverse and new forms of activism and public intervention in the democratic arena. The expansion of these new forms of religious activism requires an analysis capable of sharing different categories and objects of study.
