Language: English
Session Type: Oral
The session focus on studies about class, income, education, consumption, population characteristics, among other features that shape social stratification, in the light of the profound and rapid changes in contemporary society. The main aim is to promote a critical discussion about the concepts, definitions and methodologies of Sociology of Stratification, recognizing that geopolitics and geo-economics transformations in contemporary society pose challenges for this field of study. Therefore, we welcome papers that present innovative analysis and/or explore new research approaches allowing theoretical and methodological advances.
Sociology of Stratification is still strongly influenced by the theories of modernization and industrialization developed in the 20th century for central economies, particularly US and Europe. However, the globalization of markets, the emergence of new state actors, the raising of regional powers, the increasing relevance of emerging economies, the mundialization of consumption and lifestyle, the deterritorialization of capital and production, among other fundamental shifts societies witnessed during the first decades of 21st century, require models of analysis that go beyond those already designed for the early industrialized countries.
Based on that, our objective is to debate the processes and dynamics involved in individual and collective trajectories, by studying the mechanisms and features involved in recent changes in income distribution, class structure and living standards, adopting an analytical and critical reflection of the Sociology of Stratification, its potentialities and limitations.
