Multi-Dimensional Mobilities and Globalizing Youth Culture: From a Viewpoint of Comparative Approaches

Language: English
Session Type: Oral
Mobility is one of the most important words for understanding a globalizing society. For now, we can define this word as conveying a possibility of movement by a person within a certain sphere. But this definition or meaning of the word is too abstract to effectively discuss or use in analyses of today’s youth culture. This is largely because this word connotes a number of multi-dimensional aspects; therefore it has been used in various different academic fields without the challenge of a more integrated approach. In this session, we would like to discuss various aspects of mobilities in globalizing youth culture, toward the goal of bridging the two both theoretically and empirically. Therefore, comparative research approaches are very much welcomed.
For example, in recent studies of media youth culture, two kinds of mobilities are typically focused on; namely, “Real/Virtual Mobilities”. For example - in the instance of Japanese otaku youth, while individuals lack mobility in the real world, on the other hand, they have a high level of mobility within the virtual world. By discussing this kind of example within youth culture, we will be able to raise a number of possibilities regarding the concept of “mobilities”.
Likewise, we will also be able to invite comparative discussion about “Urban/Rural Mobilities”, “Public/Private Mobilities”, ”Past/Present Mobilities”, “Northern/Southern Mobilities”, “Gender/Class/Race approaches toward Mobilites”, ”Theoretical/Empirical approaches toward Mobilities” and so on.
Therefore, we very much welcome the idea of comparative approaches around the concept of “Mobilities” in globalizing youth culture.
