RC22 Sociology of Religion (host committee)

Language: English

Session Type: Oral

Bioethics, environmental ethics and legal ethics are recent developments that poses challenges for the isolation of religion and its insulation vis-a-vis conventional sociology. Advanced new technologies in biomedical sciences and the impact of these technologies on environment have highlighted the ethical dilemmas at all intellectual, political, legal and practical levels in which the sociological conceptualisation of ‘religion’ and its implications on social policy issues cannot be ignored anymore. In this sense, practical ethics provides an appropriate background and a good opportunity for linking the study of religion to social theory and the mainstream sociology.

This session seeks to tackle the most recent ethical issues related to the environment and any aspect of the life sciences and medicine such as abortion, stem cell therapy or research, cloning, prenatal genetic intervention, trans- (xeno)plantation and blood transfusion, cosmetic surgery, sexual health and orientations, the value of life, death, killing and letting die, advance directives and organ donations.
