The armed and security forces have gone through certain modernization processes and broadening of functions as they faced new interventions and functions in civil society. However, there are still more questions about new democratic transformations in their bosom, which are both necessary and desirable. Especially in Latin America and other regions of the world, these debates are particularly important for the role of these institutions in the past, but everywhere, there seems to be a renewed debate on the role of the armed forces and security, new tasks and challenges, which involve changes in professional and training careers. We aim to explore the ways in which new professions and professionalism has developed in the last years. Whether internal labor markets and career promotion possibilities in these institutions are as closed as they have previously been: Are higher education credentials more important than before in career development? Finally, since gender mainstreaming has been an institutional project, how were the characteristics of the sexual division of labour in the armed and security forces? Research material and publications are still fragmented in this area, concepts and theories are not fully developed in this field of Sociology of professional groups.  We aim to stimulate the debate and interest in security and armed forces as research field within sociology of professionalism and professional groups.
