This panel seeks to address the multifaceted ways migration is politicized in diverse geo-political contexts. Specifically, we aim to discuss the “illegalization” of migrant movements to first situate deportation as a sociopolitical regime shaping how we perceive border control and the exclusion of “undesirable” foreigners. Secondly, the panel seeks to move beyond a global north framework to examine the diverse ways governments exert their sovereign power over bodies, space, and “the nation” in their regulation of borders. Third, our goal is to illustrate the diverse ways that state controls the material lives of migrants, at the center of the state and at the margin of the state. Overall, we envision this panel to offer a comparative perspective and to foster conversation surrounding countries of origin, the reception, and the circulation between these two places and others.
