Session Type: Oral

Standard employment relationship (the legal, long term and permanent contracts) remains the social and subjective norm for a majority of workers, employment and companies in the world. However, it is striking that non-standard and legal employment (ex. self-employment, temporary, seasonal, casual, part time or economically dependent work) has been expanding almost everywhere, and it nowadays even dominates labour market in some regions and contexts. However, these categories – standard and non-standard employment – are not separate and categories sketching a clear and binary boundary between the “insiders” and the “outsiders” of the labour market : on the opposite, non-standard employment is articulated with other forms of standard employment on the one hand, but also with illegal or informal ones on the other hand. This session aims to address the theoretical and empirical challenges that sociology of work has to face on studying this phenomenon. In this session, the communications may stress the following points: to what extent do non-standard and informal employment relationships differ from (or are intertwined with) formal and standard work? How do standard and non-standard employment relationships both succeed and sometimes overlap throughout individual pathways at different steps of people’s life? How do workplaces and collective action integrate different these statuses? Which social categories of workers are likely to adopt the latter, and to which purpose? What kind of relationships may sociologists establish between non-standard employment and vulnerability and social issues?
