What is the relationship between deviancy theory and sociological theory in addressing changes in the rate of violence?  How is the question as to whether violence increasing or decreasing addressed? While deviancy theory usually focuses on the forms of violence that are inter-personal violent crime, there are many more forms of violence.  When inter-state violence, state violence and inter-group violence are brought into focus, does this change the answer to the question as to whether the rate of violence is increasing or decreasing?  The definition of violence is contested.  What difference does the concept and measurement of violence against women and men make to the answer as to whether violence is increasing or decreasing?  This is session is proposed by the emerging group on ‘violence and society’.
